Time To Mow The Lawn Today In Beaverton, Oregon

Today is February 12, 2011, I thought you would enjoy the passing of
the "fixing the lawn mower" torch down to Ethan today. The lawn mower
pull cord snapped last time I mowed back in October. Today was the day

Pizza Hut In Tualatin, Oregon - Before and After

On Friday night we made a trip down to Tualatin, Oregon to eat pizza
at Pizza Hut on Tonka Street. Had to give the latest creation called
"The Big Dipper" a try. Everyone in the family enjoyed dipping the
pizza in the sauce. Marcie managed to capture Willy the Whale in the
skill crane game. Here she is showing off her prize, Ethan showing off

On February 5, 2011 our family attended the 2011 Chinese New Year Cultural Fair in Portland, Oregon. The event had plenty of entertainment, such as a Lion Dance at the top of each hour, various arts and wushu performances. Little League Hitting Practice In Beaverton, Oregon

Today Ethan got in some soft toss batting practice in preparation for
Little League season that starts in March. He got in 80 swings at
wiffle balls and tennis balls. One of the balls was hit hard enough to
wedge between the chain link fence of the backstop he was hitting
towards. That is our "White House" in the background with the tennis
ball jammed in the fence.

On Thursday November 11, 2010, Ethan and the boy's from Cub Scout Pack 595 in Raleigh Hills, Portland participated in the 2010 Veterans Day Parade in Portland, Oregon. The parade route took the boys along Sandy Blvd in the Hollywood District of Portland, Oregon. The boys had a great time and look forward to attending next year.

The weekend of October 9th 2010 was a busy one for our family. Each of

the kids had a soccer game on Saturday. During halftime of Marcie's

game, Bertha spent time showing off her soccer skills. On Sunday Jeff

took the kids to Spirits Halloween store in Beaverton, Oregon to

purchase costumes. While there Jeff purchased his own mask. On Sunday

afternoon Ethan and Jeff played catch with a baseball for 20 minutes

in between rain showers, then came into the house to play cribbage.

West Hills Run Record to 4 Wins and 0 Losses This Season

On Saturday October 2, 2010, Marcie's West Hills Orange Peels soccer club defeated the Aloha team by a score of 6 - 2. This game started out quickly with Marcie playing keeper and running out toward the striker to cut the angle down and grab the ball. Only to have the opponent steam roll over Marcie as she secured the ball. Two kids on the ground, however ball was in Marcie's possession.

Marcie has a good streak going right now as keeper where she has not given up any goals in the four halves she has played keeper during the first four games.

West Hills Soccer Win In Portland, Oregon

Tonight in Portland, Oregon, Marcie's West Hills Soccer Club defeated
Somerset West by a score of 2-1. Marcie played keeper for the first
half and gave up zero goals. In the second half she played midfielder
and scored the winning goal. Here is a picture of happy dad and Marcie
moments after the game ended under the lights. Marcie's West Hills
team has 3 wins and zero losses this season.

Marcie and Ethan are so excited. The church across the street relocated the new playground practically in front of our home. On a sunny Saturday morning a crew of 25 guys and gals started assembling the new equipment. On rainy Sunday they had most of the jungle gym in place. Looks like they need to spread the bark chips and are done.

The day following our sudden snow, Marcie and Ethan built a snowman in
the backyard. It has been three days so I decided to take a look up
close and can report the snowman has melted.

Let it snow..Let it snow..Let it snow

Well the weather prediction for half an inch of snow here in
Beaverton, Oregon was off by about 5 inches. At 1:30 pm today the
prediction of snow had started. Bertha took a picture our Honda van
when the snow started. You could still see the grass in the front
yard.

By the time Jeff got home from work at 9:30 pm, the snow was 6
inches deep and traffic was a mess. With the moonlight reflecting off
the snow there was no need to use a flash to take the other two
pictures. We typically see sudden snow like this a couple times a
year. It all starts with cold air moving east to west down the
Columbia River Gorge and mixing with warmer air coming in from the
Pacific ocean. That mixture causes snow to develop quickly.

Within a day it will be melted and a memory for most of us.
Marcie and Ethan enjoyed playing in the snow this afternoon. Perfect
time to be on Christmas vacation.

Christmas Morning In Beaverton Oregon

On Christmas morning Marcie and Ethan ran down the hall from their bedrooms and found evidence that Santa had come down our chimney into our living room. The kids found a trail of leaves and carrots that had been nibbled on by the reindeer. Marcie and Ethan followed the trail to our coach and found a plate of cookies had been eaten and the milk was finished too.

Marcie and Ethan were very excited that Santa had come to visit.

Indoor Soccer Season Mittleman Jewish Community Center

Marcie (red bandana) just finish an exciting fall season of indoor soccer this weekend. Her outdoor team the Orange Peels decided to play an indoor season right after outdoor season finished. The games were held at an outstanding indoor arena at Mittleman Jewish Community Center here in Portland, Oregon. The indoor arena has artificial turf and an inflatable roof. Below are pictures of Marcie at the arena before a game. And a team picture of the team after the last game of the season. Thanks to Coach Lauer for his time to coach the girls this year.

Fun Weekend In Beaverton Oregon

We had a great weekend in between the rain showers. The kids went
shopping for their Halloween pumpkin and Ethan enjoyed opening a

Today was the day for the kids 6 month dental checkup. This was the
first time I have seen a dentist give the kids sunglasses to wear

Here is Marcie playing Keeper in yesterdays match against the team
from Aloha, Oregon. Marcie gave up one goal in the first half. Better
yet, in the second half she played Forward for the first time this
season and scored her first two goals of the season. Both of the goals
she scored required fancy foot work to get past the defender and fire

Dad Teaching Son How To Skid In Beaverton Oregon

After a nice day at the lake, Jeff decided it was time for Ethan to
learn proper technical moves to lay a long skid on the street. Ethan's
first couple attempts resulted in short little scratch marks, however
by his forth try he was laying down longer ones. This is one of many

Cherry Season In Beaverton, Oregon

Today is Fathers Day and the kids are helping pick cherries from our
backyard tree to make cherry cobbler. We are able to grab the low
hanging cherries with the garden rake. The higher cherries are out of
our reach and will be treats for the birds and squirrels.

St. Cecilia Church Expansion Beaverton, Oregon

The church across the street from our home is beginning construction
on expanding the school and the church. The heavy duty equipment
arrived last week and is beginning to move dirt around. We plan on

Super Storm Hits Beaverton For Five Minutes On Saturday

On Saturday we experienced the most bizarre weather event we can remember in the 10 years we have lived in Oregon. At 3:45 pm a cold front moved over our area in Beaverton, Oregon and for about 5 minutes we experienced a 1/4 inch of rain with 50 mile per hour winds.

Bertha was home with the kids and described the sudden event on par with one of the worst rain and wind storms experienced while living in Malaysia. Jeff was driving down highway 217 in Beaverton and described the sudden pounding rain and hail as making it impossible to see out the windshield of the car for the better part of three minutes. Windshield wipers on high couldn't not sweep the rain and hail away fast enough to see. After the mini monsoon passed, Jeff counted 50 cars on the side of the road during the last 1/2 mile he drove home.

After five minutes the storm had moved on to the northeast and left a trail of snapped trees within a few blocks of our home in Beaverton. See above pictures Jeff took of blown over trees in the neighborhood.

The Associated Press

(AP) — BEAVERTON, Ore. - A sudden, severe thunderstorm hit Beaverton, cutting power to thousands, killing one person and capsizing two sailboats.

One person died Saturday afternoon when a tree or branch fell on a car on Southwest Barbur Boulevard. He was not immediately identified.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Washington, Columbia, Clackamas, Multnomah and Clark counties.

Power went out to about 30,000 customers of Portland General Electric, mostly in Beaverton, Lake Oswego and Tigard.

Learning How To Pitch A Horseshoe

On Sunday, April 26th, we took advantage of sunny weather and took the kids over to Elsie Stuhr Center to learn how to pitch horseshoes. First thing we figured out was the distance between the pins was more than the kids were able to pitch the horseshoe. So we modified the rules and allowed the kids to throw the horseshoe about 10 feet.

We played for about 30 minutes and everyone came away having enjoyed themselves. Here are some pictures of Marcie and Ethan pitching the horseshoe. I came across this instruction video that does an excellent job explaining how to pitch a horseshoe.

Nicholas Callahan Graduates From Navy Boot Camp

On Friday January 30th 2009, Nicholas Callahan, son of Lori Callahan graduated from Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes Navel Station in Illinois. Nicholas successfully completed eight weeks of Boot Camp and was immediately sent to the Navy Technical Training Center at Lakeland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas to continue his Navy training as a Master At Arms.

Great job Nicholas, we are all very proud of you.

Running At Beaverton High School

Today we are taking advantage of the dry weather by walking down to
Beaverton High School to get some exercise. Marcie decided to work on

On Thursday night Ethan decided it was time to have Dad pull out his first loose tooth. So at 6 years of age, 3 months and 13 days, Ethan is now sporting a gap where his center incisor tooth once was. The tooth fairy arrived last night and left Ethan a $5.00 bill under his pillow. Knowing Ethan he will want to spend his tooth money this weekend.

Marcie In Goal For The First Time On Saturday September 13, 2008

On Saturday, Marcie's West Hills Orange Peels soccer team played against a team from the city of Aloha, Oregon. Marcie's team lost by a score of 6 to 1.

There was good news, Marcie was asked to play keeper (goalie) only 5 minutes before the game started. This was the first time she has ever played keeper and she did a fantastic job. She played the first half of the game and the Aloha team only scored two goals against her. See above video to watch Marcie's performance in goal.

Ethans First Soccer Game Beaverton, Oregon

Yesterday afternoon Ethan had his first soccer game of his career. He plays on the West Hills Youth Soccer Club for children age 5. The West Hills club is part of the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation Department. His game was held at Garden Home Recreation Center, which was built in 1912.

Our Children Sell Lemonade in Beaverton, Oregon

Earlier today our children, Marcie, Ethan and best friend Marina decided to earn spending money by setting up and running a lemonade stand in Beaverton, Oregon. The kids named the business " Lemonade Stand Inc." and located the business on the corner of the street next to our home.

The kids took full advantage of it being Sunday and St. Cecilia's Church being across the street from our home. The kids served about 30 cups of lemonade, mostly to members of the church. Watch the above video and watch the kids in action.

Camping Near Horsetail Falls Oregon

Our family went camping on July 25 - 27th 2008 at Ainsworth State Park in Oregon. About a two mile hike from the campground was this wonderful waterfall called Horsetail Falls. We enjoyed lunch under the horsetail before continuing our hike. Play above video of our trip to Horsetail Falls.

Ethan Riding His Bicycle For The First Time

Hey Uncle Bjorn...this week Ethan learned how to ride his bicycle for the first time. He told me he had been practicing during the day while I was at work. He was very excited to show Mom and Dad he had figured it all out. Only 11 more years before he gets his drivers license.

Must have been September of 2007 when Jeff was sitting in his front yard reading a book. Along comes a car with a funny camera mounted on top of the car. Hmmm...I wonder what that was all about. Come to find out 8 month later it was Google driving around Beaverton, Oregon and now I am a permanent fixture of Google Street view.

Indoor Rock Climbing

On Sunday April 20, 2008 Marcie was invited to a birthday party held at Stoneworks Rock Climbing Gym here in Beaverton, Oregon. The indoor facility has numerous indoor rock walls and caves for the kids to climbing on. Below is a video of Marcie climbing one of the higher walls. At 1:08 into the video you will see Ethan going up the wall in the background.

Not to be outdone, little brother Ethan proved to Mom and Dad that he was able to climb the indoor rock wall too. Below is a video of Ethan practicing his technique on a small wall before heading up the big wall that Marcie went up.

Trip to Multnomah Falls, Oregon

On Sunday March 9, 2008 our family and friend Darick, visiting from Texas A & M, spent the day at Multnomah Falls in Oregon. Multnomah Falls is 620 ft. high and consists of two waterfalls. After seeing the falls from ground level, we walked one mile up a trail to the top of the falls.

The Kids Visit To Santa

We drove Marcie and Ethan down to the local mall to see Santa and took this picture. A few days later the kids called Santa by telephone to make sure he remembered exactly what they wanted.

Our Camping Trip to Lost Lake Oregon

On July 6th, 2007 our family went camping at Lost Lake Oregon. The lake is at an elevation of 3,100 ft and a few miles from Mt. Hood. The weather was perfect all three days with temperatures in the upper 70's and night temperatures in the mid 50's. We stayed in our tent trailer next to the lake for 3 nights and plan on going back later this summer.

Cherry Season in Oregon

On June 10th, 2007 the kids and I decided it was time to pick cherries off the tree in our backyard. After about 10 minutes of picking cherries, the weather turned and it began raining. Not a problem for Ethan, he grabbed an umbrella and kept picking cherries. After we picked about 4 cups of cherries, we pitted the cherries and made a wondeful cherry cobbler dessert.

Enjoy a Day of Fishing in Oregon

On June 9th, 2007 we took the kids to Bonneville Fish Hatchery to enjoy a day of fishing. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife was holding an all day event to provide fishing instruction and water safety for children. Below are two pictures of Marcie and Ethan with the fish they caught.

On May 28th, 2007 our family attended a Memorial Day event that was held two blocks from our home here in Beaverton, Oregon. The event was held at Memorial Park just a short walk from our home. Below are two pictures of Marcie and Ethan.

Our New Camping Trailer

On April 26th, 2007 our family purchased a perfect condition Starcraft Folding Camping Trailer. The roof of the trailer cranks up to provide enough room to sleep our family and a few friends. The trailer has a propane furnace and hot water heater. The refrigerator operates on propane and electricity. The trailer came with a 3 burner stove and an outside shower with hot and cold water.

Giant 8 ft Tall Snowman in Beaverton

The day following our snowstorm, Ethan, Marcie and their friend Marina came across a giant snowman in the front yard of our next door neighbor. Seems the neighbors stayed up until 10:00pm last night putting the final touches on the snowman. The kids were able to miss school for a second day because the roads were not safe for travel.

On Tuesday January 16th, 2007 winter arrived here in Beaverton. At 6:00 am this morning it started snowing and by noon we had 6 inches of snow on the ground. Trip To The Tillamook Creamery

On Monday January 15th, 2007 we took a drive to the coast of Oregon to visit the Tillamook Creamery in Tillamook, Oregon. The creamery produces some of the best cheese and ice cream you will ever have. Ethan and Marcie enjoyed the bubble gum flavor ice cream.

For Christmas vacation this year we went to California to visit my mom and sister. During our visit we stayed at mom's home in West Hollywood and at my sister's home in Murrieta, California. For Ethans Birthday he received a pinata filled with candy. Ethan and Marcie took turns hitting the pinata with a bat. Today we went to Horsetail Falls which is east of Portland, Oregon. Horsetail Falls is a series of waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. Horsetail Falls is near more the famous Multnomah Falls which we've been to on earlier visits. The kids enjoyed the walk of about .5 mile ( half mile) up to the falls.
